In response to a current weather situation and the predictions by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), various government authorities have unveiled recommendations to combat the summer heat. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have highlighted common mistakes and symptoms related to summer heat.
Tips to beat the summer heat
Things to avoid: Cooking, diet, beverages, sun exposure
Cooking: Avoid cooking during peak summer hours as it can be harmful.
Diet: Avoid high-protein and stale food. Avoid junk food; instead, opt for fresh fruits, salads, and home-cooked meals.
Beverages: Refrain from consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks during peak summer. These can lead to further dehydration.
Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure and overcrowded places.
Avoid barefoot: Don't go outside without footwears
Beat the heat with hydration and awareness! Remember to keep your cool and avoid crowds.

Things to do during the summer season: Ventilation, hydration
Ventilation: Open doors and windows to ventilate the cooking area.
Hydration: If you experience weakness or dryness while outside, immediately drink water, juice, or fluids such as lemon juice or sugarcane juice. Consult a medical doctor if symptoms persist, advises Dr. N.P. Singh, General Physician.

How to protect the childrens from the heatwave
If you are the guardian or parents, and worried about your young one's, here are some tips to follow:
Keep them hydrated at school: Ensure that children carry fluids such as water, lemon juice, buttermilk, coconut water, or fresh fruit juice regularly.
Clothing: Ensure they wear light-colored, lightweight, and cotton clothes.
Protection: Cover children's heads with a cap or umbrella whenever they go outside in the sun. And also don't leave them in parked vehicle.
Indoor playtime: Keep children indoors between 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Allow them to play outdoor games in the evening.
Medical attention: If children complain of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, chest pain, or breathing difficulties, consult a physician immediately.
Symptoms not to ignore during the summer season or heatwave
- Hot, red, and dry skin
- Anxiety, dizziness, fainting, nausea, throbbing headache, and vomiting
- Body temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius
- Muscle weakness and cramps
- Rapid shallow breathing and rapid heartbeat
