iPhone 18 likely to be first smartphone to feature 2nm chipset, promises major efficiency and speed upgrades
While all models in the iPhone 18 series are expected to see a boost in RAM support, the integration of the 2nm chip will be exclusive to the higher end ‘Pro’ models.
While the iPhone 16 series continues to hog the limelight following its September launch, reports and speculation are circulating regarding the anticipated iPhone 18 series. A report suggests that the iPhone 18, expected to be unveiled in 2026, will likely feature a groundbreaking 2-nanometer chip. In collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Apple is set to bring the A20 chip into reality using this next-generation fabrication process. The new chipset is expected to ensure better energy efficiency and faster speeds.
The iPhone 18 series will see major technological upgrades, including a shift from Apple’s conventional InFo (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging to a more advanced WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging. This upgrade will enable seamless integration of several components including the GPU, CPU, AI/ML accelerators, and DRAM, within a single package. As a result, it will enhance performance and enable smoother communication between these components.
The performance of the iPhone 18 series be further boosted by the integration of up to 12GB of RAM. Compared to the current iPhone 16 series, which offers 8GB of RAM, this upgrade will be significant. The enhanced RAM support will facilitate better multitasking capabilities, elevating the overall user experience.
While all models in the iPhone 18 series are expected to see a boost in RAM support, the integration of the 2nm chip will be exclusive to the higher end ‘Pro’ models. Notably, the iPhone 16 Pro models come with 3nm chips, which are already recognised for their seamless performance.
The upcoming iPhone 17 series is expected to be powered by the A19 chipset, which will be based on 3nm chipset. Additionally, Apple is anticipated to introduce a new model with the 17 series, dubbed the iPhone 17 Air, which will reportedly be priced higher than even the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
In other developments, Apple has launched new iPad mini in India. The device is powered by the A17 Prochip, ensuring seamless integration with Apple Intelligence.
