7th Pay Commission: Central government employees are eligible for the Central Government Health Scheme or CGHS health insurance benefit. Under the CGHS scheme, treatment given through homeopathy, allopathy and AYUSH are covered. It is a mandatory health insurance cover for the central government employees for which they need to pay a nominal monthly premium which is deducted at source from their monthly salary.
Under the CGHS scheme, the central government employee is given cashless treatment, means the CGHS card holder need not to pay from pocket at the time of discharge after the hospitalisation. The employee is given free medicine as well at the time of discharge. A central government employee and the central government pensioners can take advantage of this insurance scheme by going to the empaneled private and government hospitals under the CGHS scheme.
It has been found that most of the time, central government employees get confused with the details of the CGHS scheme benefits. So for them, the CGHS website clearly mentions that under the CGHS scheme, a CGHS card holder is eligible for free OPD and medicine from the empaneled private and government hospital. So, even when a CGHS card holder goes for medical consultation where hospitalisation is not required, the CGHS card holder is eligible for free medical consultation at the OPD and after that free medicine from the hospital as well.
