Mumbai rain update: IMD issues yellow alert for July 9; heavy rainfall hampering local train and airline services, 27 flights diverted

Due to heavy rain in Mumbai on Sunday, local train services and flight operations are impacted. It also caused water logging and long traffic jams. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the next 24 hours as it has been raining heavily since last night (July 7).

IMD Director at Mumbai, Sunil Kamble said, "Around 270 mm of rainfall was recorded between 2 am and 6 am today. An 'orange' alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued in Mumbai for the next 24 hours. A 'Yellow' alert for heavy rain has been issued tomorrow."

Meanwhile, heavy rains in Mumbai hampered aircraft operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday morning.

Moreover, schools were closed, and exams scheduled for today were cancelled owing to severe rainfall.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that Colaba received 83. 8 mm of rainfall while Santacruz received 267.9 mm in the previous 24 hours. Mumbai experienced a total of 2547 mm of rainfall, accounting for 27 per cent of the normal annual rainfall over the same time.

Heavy rains in low-lying areas led to waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services, said the civic body.

Water-logging was reported from Worli, Buntara Bhavan, in Kurla East, King's Circle area of Mumbai, Dadar and Vidyavihar Railway Station. 

Flight operations affected at Mumbai airport

In a statement, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA), Mumbai, said, "Today heavy rains and low visibility led to the suspension of runway operations from 2:22 am to 3:40 am. 27 flight diversions were reported. Flights diverted to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Indore, etc. Currently, priority is being given to arrivals, delaying departures, and consequential changes that were made to accommodate diverted flights."

27 flights diverted

As many as 27 flights were diverted from Mumbai airport on Monday, and several have been delayed due to heavy rains and low visibility, according to CSIA.

The airport management said flights were diverted to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore. Priority is being given to arrivals, delaying departures, and consequential changes that were made to accommodate diverted flights.

Mumbai University cancels exams

Mumbai University has postponed all exams of the Centre of Distance and Open Learning scheduled on Monday of the first half following heavy rains, an official statement said.

Local train services hit amid heavy rainfall

Local train services on the Central Railway routes were severely hit and several flights were cancelled early Monday morning while various roads in Mumbai were waterlogged after some areas recorded more than 300 mm of rainfall overnight, officials said. Flights to/from Mumbai are impacted due to heavy rains, said IndiGo.
