Prices of most vegetables such as tomato, peas, green beans and bottle gourd have surged sharply over the last one week in Punjab and Haryana due to various factors, traders said today. The prices of peas have risen sharply from nearly Rs 70-80 per kg to Rs 100-110 per kg, they said. Prices of tomato, potato and onion -- which are commonly consumed -- too have registered an increase.
Tomato prices, which had witnessed a steep fall last month in Punjab and Haryana owing to bulk supplies in the markets, are now selling at Rs 40 per kg or more from earlier Rs 15-20 per kg. Prices of onion have risen from Rs 15-17 per kg to Rs 25 per kg, while potato prices for pahari variety have risen to Rs 30 per kg from Rs 20-25 earlier.
Prices of other vegetables available in the retail markets, which have registered sharp increase include beans (from Rs 50 per kg to Rs 80 per kg) bottle gourd (from Rs 30 per kg to Rs 60 per kg) and cucumber (Rs 30-40 per kg to Rs 40-60 per kg).
While cauliflower prices have witnessed a jump of nearly Rs 20 per kg from earlier Rs 40-50 per kg, bitter gourd was selling in the range of Rs 40-Rs 50 per kg and carrot prices have gone up from nearly Rs 40 per kg to Rs 60 per kg.
However, the prices of pumpkin, spinach, lemon, bitter gourd and brinjals have remained largely unchanged, traders said.

"There is short supply of many vegetables as crop got damaged due to dust haze and then rains at several places in Punjab and Haryana. The prices are now unlikely to come down for the next couple of weeks as more rains are expected in the region once monsoon arrives in about a week," a trader here said.
Earlier this month, prices of vegetables and other items had soared in the wake of dwindling supplies of farm produce due to farmers' agitation.
