Government approves draft GSR notification for domestic Crash Test ratings; Bharat NCAP to be at par with global protocols, says road minister Nitin Gadkari
Bharat NCAP will serve as a consumer-centric platform allowing customers to opt for safer cars based upon their star-ratings, while promoting a healthy competition among OEMs in India to manufacture safer vehicles, Nitin Gadkari said.
Automobiles in India will soon be accorded domestic star ratings based upon their performance in 'Crash Tests'. The Narendra Modi government today approved draft rules for Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) which was announced by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
"I have approved the Draft GSR Notification to introduce Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program), wherein automobiles in India shall be accorded Star Ratings based upon their performance in Crash Tests," Gadkari Tweeted.

Commenting on the parameter to rate, he disclosed that Star Rating of Indian Cars will be based on Crash Tests and is extremely crucial not only to ensure structural and passenger safety in cars, but to also increase the export-worthiness of Indian automobiles.
"The testing protocol of Bharat NCAP shall be aligned with Global Crash Test Protocols factoring in the existing Indian regulations, allowing OEMs to get their vehicles tested at India’s own in-house testing facilities," the tweet said further.
"Bharat NCAP will prove to be a critical instrument in making our automobile industry Aatmanirbhar with the mission of making India the Number 1 automobile hub in the world," another tweet said.

Automobiles in India are to be given 'Star Ratings' based on performance in crash tests. Bharat NCAP will rate cars on the basis of Crash, safety and all other features.
This is being seen as an important move by the government to ensure higher safety in automobiles.
The government had sought suggestions on Bharat NCAP.
The government has claimed that Bharat NCAP rating will be better than its foreign counterpart, ARAI claimed.
There will also not be any need to send car outside India for Crash Tests and companies will be able to do it in-house.
The rating under Bharat NCAP will be on the basis of crash test, safety and other features.
The existing rules will be considered.
This is also expected to give a push to the exports from India.

According to the information received from sources,Bharat NCAP will come into existence from next year,rules to be implemented from next year.

- Bharat NCAP will be better and more centric according to the geographical and road needs.

- To get vehicles tested,manufacturers will be charged.

- Rules of Latin NCAP and Euro NCAP are stricter than Global NCAP,Bharat NCAP to be safer.
- Snowfall in Foreign countries is more, rules related to skidding will be different.
- Bharat NCAP is a Safety Assessment Program for the cars manufactured in India.
- Bharat NCAP is expected to be implemented from next year.
- Vehicles will be required to have safety features like 6 airbags,Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), 3-point seatbelts.
- Electronic stability control (ESC)to be made mandatory.
To ensure better ratings in Bharat NCAP,features such as AC, Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEBS), lane departure warning, blind spot detection and Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) should be included.
