With an aim to improve road safety standards, Gadkari launches Bharat NCAP
Under the Bharat NCAP programme, based on the performance of the car during testing, vehicles will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5 for adult occupants and child occupants.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched India's first crash testing programme- Bharat NCAP. With the launch, India became only the fifth country in the world to have a dedicated car assessment scheme. Bharat NCAP will be implemented across India on October 1, 2023.
As per the programme, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their vehicles to be tested as per Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.
Based on the performance of the car during testing, vehicles will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5, for adult occupants and child occupants.
Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and accordingly make their purchase decision.
What Gadkari said about NCAP
Union minister Gadkari said buyers in India were concerned about car safety and wanted to purchase the best cars in terms of safety.
He said that Indian automobile engineers are learning about modern technology, and their expertise will help maintain high global safety standards for cars.
The minister was also hopeful that car manufacturers would focus on modern car safety.
He said that companies keen on manufacturing cars with modern safety features will see their market share increase.
Pinning hopes on India's ability to emerge as a leading car exporter, Gadkari said that for that, the quality and price of Indian cars should be on par with global competition.
He said that car manufacturers in India are supporting exports, and the global auto industry would become the No. 1 industry in the world.
