Sydney fireworks to be the among the first to welcome New Year 2020 amidst raging bushfires

Sydney fireworks: Australia's largest city is all set to welcome the New Year 2020 with heavy fireworks on New Year's Eve even though the devastating Sydney bushfire is still looming over the city. Toxic smoke has surrounded the city of Sydney for a week due to the ongoing bushfire. However, to maintain its custom it will kick-off the new year with a dazzling display of fireworks. Not just fireworks there are various other celebrations planned by the city of Sydney to welcome the New Year 2020 in traditional style and that the New Year Firework is apart of that celebration.

However, while Sydney fireworks will happen, similar fireworks displays were scrapped in Canberra — Australia's capital and Sydney's western suburbs due to the raging bushfires and extreme weather conditions. Notably, the final go-ahead came after fire authorities said it was safe to go ahead with the Sydney fireworks over the water. Sydney is a port city.

"We have committed to harnessing the enormous power of the event to raise more money for drought- and fire-affected communities," Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore revealed.

Critics wanted Sydney to use the $6.5 million ($4.5 million) spent on the display to fight bushfires ringing the city, but officials say the event is worth Aus$130 million to the economy and canceling it would not help those impacted by the fires. More than one lakh fireworks will light up the skyline for 12 minutes to about one million spectators who usually crowd foreshores and parks.
