IPL 2023: IPL’s earnings, BCCI’s earnings, media rights, teams’ brand values, sponsorship deals, ticket sales, franchisee sales, and many more numbers
The BCCI and the IPL’s main earnings saw huge jump due to renewed broadcast deals last year, which fetched revenue of more than Rs 48,000 crore
IPL 2023 revenue:
The Indian Premier League is in its 16th year of existence. Ever since its beginning in 2008, the league has served as a money-making platform for the Board of Cricket for Control in India, the IPL governing council, teams, sponsors, broadcasters, stadiums, and players.
Among non-football and NBA leagues, the IPL is the most-watched sports league in the world.
In terms of revenue earnings, it easily competes with the world’s top leagues, even though most of those leagues are based in North America and Europe and earn revenue in the US dollar or the euro.
In this write-up, Zee Biz takes you through the business numbers of the IPL. The sources of these numbers are a Brand Finance report released in December 2022 and press statements of the BCCI, IPL, and participating teams.
IPL Brand Value rises by 77 per cent year on year:
Brand IPL grew even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the tournament was shifted to Dubai for two years (2020, 2021), brought back to India (2022), and when the concept of home-and-away matches was cancelled.
IPL’s brand value rose by 77 per cent to $8.4 billion in 2022, primarily due to a renewed broadcast rights deal.
IPL media rights (more than 48,000 crore):
In June 2022, Viacom18 won the IPL’s digital media rights for Rs 23,758 crore, while Star India grabbed India TV rights for 23,575 crore in a five-year deal.
The deals combined were sold for a record $6.02 billion, much more than the previous five-year deal of $2.4 billion won by Star India.
Viacom18 also won the non-exclusive Package-C for Rs 2,991 crore, while along with Times Internet, Viacom18 also won overseas TV and digital rights for Rs 1,324 crore.
IPL's main sponsorship deals:
Title sponsors: TATA (Rs670 crore for two years)
Official sponsors: Dream 11, CRED, up, RuPay, Saudi Tourism Authority, Swiggy Instamart, Upstox (Rs 210 crore)
Umpire sponsors: Paytm (Rs 28 crore)
Strategic timeout sponsor: CEAT (Rs 30 crore)
IPL's earnings from ticket sales:
While the starting price of online tickets range from Rs 500 to Rs 2,100, the end price can go up to Rs 30,000.
It depends upon the availability of tickets and the popularity of the match and the team.
Tickets for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians are most likely to fetch higher prices.
Mumbai Indians the most valuable team:
Mumbai Indians had a nightmarish 2022 season with a bottom finish in the points table of IPL 2022, but the lacklustre show didn’t affect their brand much.
Rather, the team saw a growth of 4 per cent to retain its top position as the most valuable IPL team at $83 million.
Kolkata Knight Riders finished seventh in IPL 2022, but thanks to its association with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, the team’s brand grew at a rate of 16 per cent.
It is the second most valuable team at $76.8 million after Mumbai Indians. Chennai Super Kings finished ninth in IPL 2022 and their value dipped 3 per cent to $73.6 million.
Royal Challengers Bangalore the strongest brand:
Royal Challengers Bangalore emerged as the strongest brand in IPL with a brand value growth of 34 per cent to $68 million.
They are followed by Mumbai Indians, and IPL 2022 champions Gujarat Titans, whose brand value is $47 million after their debut IPL season in 2022.
However, the largest growth was witnessed by last-year’s runners-up Rajasthan Royals, who were up 78 per cent to $61.3 million.
IPL's earnings from new teams:
The IPL earned Rs 12,500 crore ($1.5 billion) from two new teams– Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. RPSG group purchased the Lucknow franchisee for Rs 7,090 crore, while CVC won the Ahmedabad franchisee bid for Rs 5,625 crore.
IPL's ad revenue:
Disney+Hotstar earned an estimated ad revenue of Rs 1,500 crore from IPL 2022.
However, according to some source-based reports, Viacom18 has targeted ad revenue of Rs 3,700 crore from IPL 2023, and it has already sealed deals worth Rs 2,700 crore.
However, the estimation also included the women’s IPL, which had 20 matches. The men’s IPL has 74 league matches between 10 teams.
