Rahul Gandhi disqualified as MP after conviction in 'Modi Surname' case by Surat Court: List of other MPs disqualified due to court's conviction
Congress party's Rahul Gandhi disqualified as a Member of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark, March 23.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP from Wayanad, Kerala - has been disqualified as a Member of Lok Sabha following his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark. "Rahul Gandhi now stands disqualified, as per the law," said former party leader Kapil Sibal. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday was present in a meeting of the MPs at the party office on parliament premises. The Congress party called a meeting, which was also attended by Sonia Gandhi, of its steering committee members, senior leaders, state chiefs and legislative party leaders on Friday to devise a strategy after Rahul Gandhi`s conviction. The party has planned mega protests in the coming days, taking all like-minded parties along.

Rahul Gandhi’s conviction
It may be recalled that the Congress leader was convicted by the Surat court in 2019 for an insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
His statement was “Why do all thieves have Modi's surname”.
Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, says that the moment a member of parliament is convicted of any offence and sentenced for at least two years, she or he attracts disqualification.
