Delhi MCD Mayor election 2023: Currently, the mayoral office is not in existence. After the December 4 municipal polls, this was the third successive session of the House. The first two sessions were held on January 6 and January 24.
Delhi MCD Mayor election 2023: The newly-elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi is functioning without a mayor. On February 6, for the third time in a month, that the Municipal House meeting was adjourned without electing a mayor.
Currently, the mayoral office is not in existence. It should be noted that after the December 4 municipal polls, this was the third successive session of the House. The first two sessions were held on January 6 and January 24.
Delhi MCD Mayor election 2023: Date and Result
The election is scheduled for February 16. However, the office of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor on Monday told the Supreme Court that it would postpone the February 16 mayoral election to a date after February 17, as per PTI report.
Delhi MCD Mayor election 2023: Postponed three times
In the last one month, three successive meetings of the House were adjourned.
- The House was convened for the first time on January 6, after the high-stakes civic polls on December 4, and was adjourned following acrimonious exchanges between members of the BJP and the AAP.
- The second municipal House held on January 24, was briefly adjourned after the oath-taking ceremony, and was later adjourned till next date by the pro-tem presiding officer.
- After that, the House was adjourned on February 6 again for the third time, a month after the first municipal House.
Delhi MCD Mayor election 2023: Why it delayed
The Municipal House in Delhi had failed to elect a mayor on February 6, following ruckus over the decision to allow aldermen to vote in the mayoral poll, even as the AAP alleged a "planned conspiracy" by the BJP to stall the process.
An agitated AAP, which is seeking a "court-monitored" election, moved the Supreme Court on February 7 over this issue.
On February 8, the Supreme Court had sought responses of the office of the Lieutenant Governor, pro-tem presiding officer of the MCD Satya Sharma, and others on a plea filed by AAP's mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi.
The SC on Monday observed that nominated members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) cannot vote in a mayoral election even as the poll is scheduled for February 16.
Delhi MCD Mayor election 2023: December 4 municipal polls
In the December polls, the AAP had emerged as a clear winner by bagging 134 wards and ended the BJP's 15-year rule in the civic body. The BJP won 104 wards to finish second, while the Congress won nine wards in the 250-member Municipal House.
The civic body in Delhi had 272 wards across its three corporations — NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC, which existed from 2012-2022, before being reunified into a sole MCD which formally came into existence on May 22 last year.
