World liver day 2023: What to do if someone has fatty liver?

Dr Raghu DK, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist from Apollo Hospitals said that patients with fatty liver should be referred to a gastroenterologist for adequate counselling and further management.

"The cornerstone for the treatment of NAFLD is weight management, active lifestyle, good control of associated conditions like Diabetes, PCOS,and Hypertension.  Patient education is highly important and regular follow-up of NAFLD with FIBROSCAN which can quantify the fat content in the liver along with assessing the response to treatment, plays a pivotal role to arrest the progression of NAFLD to cirrhosis," he added.

World Hepatitis day 2023

Every year on July 28, World Hepatitis Day is celebrated. As per the WHO, low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can cause a range of health problems and can be fatal. 

Dr Bharani, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist from Apollo Hospitals said, "The liver can be affected most commonly by hepatitis viruses, alcohol, drugs, and most importantly in the present day scenario by obesity and diabetes, where it is categorized under NAFLD-non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fatty liver can progress to a more severe liver disease called cirrhosis which in turn can lead to liver cancer."
