World Asthma Day 2023: World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May. This year it is being celebrated today i.e. on May 2. The day aims to raise awareness about asthma, a noncommunicable disease (NCD) that affects both children and adults. It is the most common chronic disease among children.

The theme for World Asthma Day 2023 is “Asthma Care for All”. As per Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborative organization founded in 1993 the theme promotes the development and implementation of effective asthma management programs in all resource countries.

World Asthma Day: History

World Asthma Day was first held in 1998 in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first World Asthma Meeting held in Barcelona, Spain. Over the years participation in World Asthma Day has increased. The day has become an important asthma awareness and education event.

  • Asthma symptoms: Inflammation and narrowing of the small airways in the lungs cause asthma symptoms. The symptoms may include any combination of cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

  • As per WHO, asthma affected an estimated 262 million people in 2019 and caused 4,55,000 deaths.
  • Inhaled medication may control asthma symptoms and allow people with asthma to lead a normal, active life.
  • Avoiding asthma triggers can also help to reduce asthma symptoms.
