International Museum Day 2023: International Museum Day is observed on May 18 every year since 1977. The day represents a unique moment for the international museum community. Different events and activities are planned on this day and go on through the entire week or the weekend. More than 37,000 museums from 158 countries and territories participated in an event organised last year.

The theme of International Museum Day this year is "Museums, Sustainability and Well-being". Calling museums a key contributor to the well-being and to the sustainable development of our communities the official website of the International Council of Museums said, "As trusted institutions and important threads in our shared social fabric, they are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change."

As per the official website, from tackling social isolation and improving mental health to supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity, there are multiple ways in which museums can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

International Museum Day 2023 will focus on the following key points: 

• Goal 3 Global Health and Wellbeing: The goal is to ensure healthy lives as well as to promote well-being for all at all ages, especially concerning mental health and social isolation.
• Goal 13 Climate Action: The goal is to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, to adopt low-carbon practices in the Global North and mitigation strategies in the Global South.
• Goal 15 Life on Land: The goal is to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, to amplify the voices of indigenous leaders and to raise awareness of the loss of biodiversity.
