Cyclone Mocha: Check advisory, landfall date, areas likely to be affected

Cyclone Mocha News: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that cyclonic circulation might develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6, 2023. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 7. This is likely to concentrate into a depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on May 8. Therefore, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal, the IMD added.

IMD in its advisory has asked fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from May 7 onwards and those who are at sea are advised to return to safer places before May 7.  

Director General (DG) of IMD, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that there is consensus over the formation of a low pressure and its intensification into a cyclone by May 9.
 
"We have not specified its path and intensity and the area over the land where it is likely to hit. Once the low pressure is formed, we will provide detailed predictions regarding landfall and its intensity," said Mohapatra, adding, "As of now, there is no such forecast for landfall over the Indian coast."
 
Initially, there will be squally weather and hence the fishermen should not venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal from May 7 onwards, he advised.
 
The DG made it clear that no alert has been issued for the Odisha coast and there is no forecast about the likely impact of the system on Odisha.

Keeping in view the weather development, the Odisha government has already put collectors of 18 coastal and adjoining districts and officials of 11 departments on the alert, its special relief commissioner Satyabrata Sahu said on Wednesday.
