Besides India and neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and parts of Russia, residents of other parts of Asia, North and South America, Australia, North Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean will be able to see the celestial event. Chandra Grahan will be visible in India. While a total Lunar Eclipse will be visible from eastern cities, people living in northern and other parts of the country could see a partial Lunar Eclipse. A total Lunar Eclipse or Purna Chandra Grahan will be visible from Patna, Ranchi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Siliguri and other eastern cities. Those living in Delhi and other northern cities will be able to see a partial lunar eclipse.  Those living in Kathmandu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing, Sydney, Jakarta, Melbourne, San Francisco, Washington DC, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Mexico City will also be able to see the total Lunar Eclipse.

According to Drik Panchang, the Chandra Grahan sutak started at 09:21 AM in the morning and the sutak period will end at 06.18 PM in the evening. During Solar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 4 Prahars and during Lunar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 3 Prahars before Eclipse. There are total 8 Prahars from Sunrise to Sunrise. Hence Sutak is observed for 12 hours before Solar Eclipse and for 9 hours before Lunar Eclipse.

Why does the Moon turn red during a lunar eclipse? Blood Moon

According to NASA,  lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan occurs when Sun, Earth and Moon align so that the Moon passes into Earth's shadow. The Moon falls within the Umbra -- the darkest part of Earth's shadow. When this happens, Moon will turn a reddish hue. Lunar eclipses are sometimes called “Blood Moons” because of this phenomenon.

"The same phenomenon that makes our sky blue and our sunsets red causes the Moon to turn red during a lunar eclipse. It’s called Rayleigh scattering. Light travels in waves, and different colors of light have different physical properties. Blue light has a shorter wavelength and is scattered more easily by particles in Earth’s atmosphere than red light, which has a longer wavelength," the space agency added.

How to watch Chandra Grahan, Lunar Eclipse 2022

You don’t need any special equipment to observe a lunar eclipse, although binoculars or a telescope will enhance the view and the red color.
