Earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hits Bay of Bengal
An official of the Bangladesh Meteorological Division said that the epicenter was within the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, very near India.
Earthquake Today News: An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit the Bay of Bengal today i.e. December 5. According to reports, tremors were felt at around 9 am. No casualties have been reported so far. Also, there is no tsunami alert.
The epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km in the Bay of Bengal.
An official of the Bangladesh Meteorological Division said that the epicenter was within the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, very near India.
Earlier on Saturday, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 jolted Chamba and its surrounding districts in Himachal Pradesh but no loss of life was reported.
The earthquake occurred on Friday night with the epicentre being Dhar Makkan near Tissa area of Chamba district, Special Secretary Disaster Management Sudesh Mokta said.
The tremors lasted a few seconds forcing people out of their homes. No loss of life or property has been reported so far, he said.
Also, a strong earthquake shook parts of Indonesia's main island of Java on the same day, causing panic but only minor damage just two weeks after an equally powerful quake killed hundreds.
The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.7 quake was centred about 18 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of Banjar, a city between West Java and Central Java provinces, at a depth of 112 kilometers (70 miles).
