Interestingly, The Kerala Story’s fourth week numbers are ahead of Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan, which collected around Rs 14 crore nett, reported Mid-Day. The film, which stirred controversy ever since the release of its teaser, is going to be one of the highest grossers at the box office and it’s expected to cross the Rs 250 crore mark this weekend.
The Kerala Story revolves around the harrowing tale about how some women in Kerala were forcibly converted and inducted into terror outfit ISIS. Vipul Amrutlal Shah, who has delivered hits like Namastey London and Commando, has bankrolled the movie.
The film, which depicts the life of three women from Kerala around religious conversion, features Yogita Bihani and Siddhi Idnani in the lead roles apart from Adah Sharma.
Adah has essayed the role of a victim who dreams of becoming a nurse but gets abducted from her home and is imprisoned in Afghanistan by a radical Islamist group.
It is worth noting that the film has been embroiled in controversy ever since its teaser was released in November 2022. There was widespread outrage as the teaser claimed that 32,000 girls had gone missing in Kerala with most of them being recruited by ISIS.
A slew of petitions were filed before various courts seeking a ban on the film. Consequently, The Kerala Story’s filmmakers agreed to withdraw the teaser and carry a disclaimer that the film’s content is fictional.
Furthermore, the State of West Bengal imposed a ban on the screening of the film. But this order was stayed by the Supreme Court on May 18.
