Prices of vegetable oil, chilli and cumin, which together account for less than 5 per cent of the veg thali cost, eased 6 per cent, 30 per cent and 58 per cent on-year, respectively For a non-veg thali, the cost decline was due to an estimated 1-3 per cent on-month decline in broiler prices due to the Shravan month in August, when non-veg consumption drops.

The reduction in the cost of the veg thali year-over-year was mainly due to a dramatic 40 per cent drop in tomato prices, which had reached Rs 110 per kg in July 2023. Last year's high prices were due to flash floods that disrupted supply from northern states and pest infestations affecting crops in Karnataka.

Roti Rice Rate in June: The average cost of a vegetarian thali increased by 10 per cent in June 2024. On the other hand, the cost of non-vegetarian meal has declined due to fall in broiler prices, according to the monthly "Roti Rice Rates" report by CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analysis.

The cost of preparing a typical non-vegetarian meal (thali) at home decreased by 7 per cent over the same period. Essentially, it became more expensive to make a vegetarian meal and cheaper to make a non-vegetarian meal compared to a year ago, the research highlighted.
