Q3 FY21 numbers of ICICI Bank were strong with operational results coming in line with expectations. However, asset quality performance and loan growth were encouraging. Net interest income (NII) rose by 16% yoy and 5.8% qoq to Rs 9912 cr, matching expectations. PAT came in at Rs 4940 cr, up 19% yoy and 16% qoq, in line with estimates.
Shares of ICICI Bank rose as much as 5.2% to an all-time high on Monday, after India`s second-largest private lender reported strong December quarter results buoyed by improved loan growth.
ICICI Bank delivered strong Q3 FY21 results with a big core PPOP beat (+17.7% YoY), just 1.1% slippage and less than 0.4% in restructuring, leading to almost normalised profitability in Q3 FY21 itself (14% ROE). The retail slippage spike (2x vs FY20) was better than expected and corporate slippage of 1% of loans was a big positive surprise, and highlights its improvement in underwriting over the past 3-4 years.

Private banks continued to make good progress in increasing their share in CASA deposits, although the pace has slowed down in the past few years. However, they continue to make significant share gains in term deposits. PSU banks have ceded 250 bps market share in term deposits and 80 bps in CASA deposits in FY2020. Private banks and SFBs (Small Finance Banks) accounted for most of the gains although foreign banks have seen an improvement in current account deposits. Steady expansion and focus coupled with better products and interest rates have helped private banks gain market share.

An under-appreciated aspect is that its operating profit grew at 19-20% in FY19-20 & 18% YoY in first half of FY21. It has narrowed the gap with HDFC Bank and as retail growth & corporate-ecosystem banking pay-off with normal credit cost, ICICI Bank can grow normalised profits by 17-20%. Uptick in CASA growth is key for ICICI Bank.

Even though overall credit growth has been weak on system levels, at 5% yoy, larger and well-placed banks (such as SBI or State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank) are expected to report better advances growth, indicating market share gain.
