It is believed that Lord Chitragupta is the one who keeps a record of the karma of all human beings and decides who will go to heaven and hell by scrutinising their deeds. According to Hindu mythology, he is a close associate of Lord Yama - the god of death. It is believed that Chitragupta was created from the soul and mind of Lord Brahma. This is why he was given the right to write Vedas like Brahmins and also assigned the duty of a Kshatriya. Chitragupta is worshiped on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. The day is also known as Yama Dwitiya. It is to be noted that usually Bhai Dooj is also celebrated on the same day.
