Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist created the World Wide Web (WWW) on 1 August 1989. Little did anyone know that the information retrieval system created by Tim Berners-Lee would become an indispensable part of life over the next few decades. The World Wide Web, or simply the web, has now developed into a collection of all webpages, websites and resources that we can navigate to.
World Wide Web Day is marked every year to celebrate the anniversary of the web being created as a tool to browse information across the global system of interconnected computers (internet).
World Wide Web Day: History
Tim Berners-Lee developed the basics of the web – a server, HTML, HTTP, the World Wide Web browser, and the first website – while he was employed at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. Berners-Lee was trying to create a new way for scientists to share the data from their experiments easily.
After its development in 1991, the web was shared with other research institutes and organisations over the next two years. Later, the system was shared with the public as CERN waived royalty on the use of the WWW in 1993 and shared the code. Within a year, hundreds of websites were developed. Since then, the system of information sharing has never been the same.
World Wide Web Day: Significance
World Wide Web Day aims to highlight the impact of the web in improving lives. The web has helped people facilitate communication, information sharing and access to education and other resources. It has created an interconnected world. It won’t be wrong to say that the internet would not have been a crucial part of human life if the World Wide Web had not made it easier for people to browse websites and online information systems.
World Wide Web: Impact on the world
The World Wide Web made it possible to share and access information anywhere in the world. It connected the world in a global communication network that was impossible to imagine earlier. The development of the World Wide Web made it possible for anyone to use the internet. It also had an impact on the development of social media, blogs and other ways of sharing information online.
