WhatsApp sets new record! Over 100 bn messages sent on New Year's eve

We all know that the popular Facebook-owned chat platform, Whatsapp is a widely used communications app, but on New Year's Eve, it has broken all records! Over 100 billion messages were sent on WhatsApp on December 31st, 2019 worldwide. The contribution to this number made by the Indians fans will make your eyes pop too!

During the 24 hours leading up to midnight on New Years Eve, over 20 billion messages were sent through WhatsApp in India alone! This is nearly one-fifth of the total number of messages exchanged globally.

Not surprisingly, the largest share of WhatsApp users come from India with 40 crore. And, unsurprisingly, most messages sent on 31st December were wishing everyone 'happy new year'.

On an occasion like New Year, people like to exchange a large number of messages on the app including picture messages and stickers. So, as many as 12 billion picture messages were sent around the world on New Year's Eve. 

If we talk about last year, there were 75 billion messages shared on WhatsApp, which included 13 billion images and 5 billion videos.

The top 5 features that are most popular with WhatsApp users worldwide are messaging, status, picture messaging, calling and voice notes. WhatsApp says that Text  and Status features were the most popular features in 2019 followed by picture messaging, calling and voice notes.

What next? WhatsApp is all set launch a number of new features in 2020 that will make its users experience even more thrilling. This includes features like Dark Mode, Self-destructing messages, Multiple-device support, Payments, Advertisements.
