WhatsApp introduces ‘search images from web’ feature: Here's how to use it and all you need to know
Currently, the feature is available to select beta testers using the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, with a wider rollout expected in the upcoming weeks.
In today’s era of misinformation and fake news, verifying the authenticity of information shared on social media is of paramount importance. WhatsApp is currently working on a new feature aimed at helping users to verify the authenticity of images shared online. The feature allows users to conduct web-based searches in the app itself. Currently being rolled out to select beta users, it can be accessed through WhatsApp’s options menu while viewing any image. Reports suggest that beta users can now use this feature, adding an extra layer of security against misinformation.
Digitally altered images are highly prevalent, making it challenging to distinguish genuine images from doctored ones. WhatsApp’s new feature will equip users to stay vigilant against the spread of rumours or manipulated media.
To access this feature, users can open an image in a WhatsApp chat, tap on the three-dot option, and choose the ‘Search on web’ option. This initiates a search on the web, providing users additional context for the image, such as original source. This helps users identify if an image has been repurposed or presented in a misleading way. It also saves time by searching images with a single tap, unlike the traditional method of reverse image searches.
This feature aligns with WhatsApp's efforts to give users greater control over the information being shared in conversations, adding a layer of transparency. Notably, it will be optional, and users will have full control over whether they intend to use this feature.
Currently, the feature is available to select beta testers using the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, with a wider rollout expected in the upcoming weeks.
In other related development: WhatsApp rolled out a feature named ‘Custom Lists’, which enables users to prioritize and manage different types of communication. The ‘Customs List’ feature ensures improved organisation, decluttered experience, and facilitates quick access.
