National Technology Day 2022: Here' why we celebrate it - history, significance, theme and more

National Technology Day 2022: Every year on May 11, National Technology Day 2022 is celebrated in India to mark the achievements and contributions of the countrymen in the field of science and technology. 

On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote: "Today, on National Technology Day, we express gratitude to our brilliant scientists and their efforts that led to the successful Pokhran tests in 1998. We remember with pride the exemplary leadership of Atal Ji who showed outstanding political courage and statesmanship."

National Technology Day is observed in India to honour the remarkable hard work and achievements of Indian scientists. According to Science and Technology Ministry, awards are given to several innovators and entrepreneurs on this day every year. 

The day is a significant milestone in the history of India’s technological innovations as India successfully tested nuclear bombs in Pokhran on May 11, 1998 and is commemorated every year by honouring the architects of such innovations. The day also marks the flight of Hansa-3, India’s first indigenous aircraft, which was flown in Bengaluru when the nuclear tests were being organized in Rajasthan. 

According to DNA India, every year, Technology Development Board (TDB) seeks applications for National awards for the commercialization of technologies under three categories National Awards, MSME awards, and Startup awards. These awards are conferred to various industries for the successful commercialization of innovative indigenous technology.

The theme for 2022 is “Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future”. The theme was launched by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
