In India, the vaccination drive for adults between 18 and 44 years of age began from May 1, 2021. The vaccination drive for people above 45 years and 60 years had already begun earlier. The registration process for COVID-19 vaccination is very important and people must be very careful or else they can end up in various cyber traps.

People must take note of the fact that a malicious SMS has been doing rounds in India over the past few days that has a fake link to an app for coronavirus vaccine registrations. Lukas Stefanko, Malware researcher at cybersecurity firm ESET, explained in a series of tweets how the SMS targeted Indian users to download a worm app by luring them to register for the COVID-19 vaccination. He tweeted, "SMS worm impersonates Covid-19 vaccine free registration."

In his tweet, he explained the main aim of the SMS worm. He wrote, "Android SMS worm tries to spread via text messages as fake free registration for Covid-19 vaccine - targets India Flag of India." He alerted the people by saying that it can spread itself via SMS to victim contacts with link to download this malware. People will find it surprising to know that this app was initially called 'COVID-19' but was later renamed to ‘Vaccine Register’.

It is understandable that currently, everyone is keen to have vaccine shots and therefore are falling prey to these malwares. The people must be alert and should avoid from using any kind of apps and software that have not been officially recognised.

To register for COVID-19 vaccination shots in India, one has to login to the CoWIN portal at cowin.gov.in from where the entire registration process can be done and appointment for COVID-19 vaccines can be scheduled.
