Oppo showcases Oppo X 2021 rollable concept phone that expands in your hand: All you need to know

If you thought foldable smartphones are cool, hold your breath because Oppo has pushed the technology further with its new concept smartphone. The company on Tuesday showcased the Oppo X 2021 rollable concept phone which literally expands in your hand to give a large screen experience. The smartphone can adjust between 6.7 and 7.4-inches in diagonal which presents new opportunities for developers and users.  

Oppo gives the example of clicking a video link which then results in the screen adjusting for the aspect ratio on its own. At first glance, the Oppo X 2021 is a usual smartphone with 6.7-inch OLED display. However, it comes with a proprietary Warp Track high-strength screen laminate part of which sits below the actual display and is just 0.1mm thick at its thinnest point.  

The rolling motors also allow Oppo to achieve a zero-crease screen, which we are yet to see on foldable smartphones. The motors can retract and extend the display. The company has not revealed any plans of launching the phone for commercial use.  

The 3+N+X strategy

Meanwhile, the smartphone maker has unveiled its “3+N+X” technology development strategy. The “3” refers to the three underlying technologies, namely hardware, software and services technologies, which help OPPO to bring an integrated smart life to users worldwide. “N”, represents a number of OPPO's essential capabilities, including AI, security and privacy, multimedia, and interconnectivity.  

Lastly, "X", refers to the leading-edge and differentiated technologies and strategic resources such as the flash charge technology that foster innovation and greatly improve user experience.
