Xiaomi on Thursday launched Mi 10T Pro (5G) and Mi 10T (5G), with what it calls Industry’s first -step Intelligent AdaptiveSync display. Leading up to the launch, the smartphone maker had confirmed the presence of this tech on its 144Hz display panel. Initially, I was surprised by the claim, having seen the Adaptive display on Samsung smartphones, the Note 20 series to be specific. So, I did what you should when confused – Read, only to find out that AdaptiveSync display is different from the adaptive displays we have seen in the past.
I am sure some of you would have also had similar questions. So, here is a look at both the tech and their differences.
Adaptive Display
The Adaptive Display which was introduced on Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra works largely as a power-saving measure. It adjusts the display’s refresh rate depending on current demand. For example, if you are running a game, the phone will be at 120Hz refresh rate. It can drop to 60Hz in other cases or when the battery is low.
AdaptiveSync display
The AdaptiveSync display also automatically matches the screen refresh rate with the content frame rate but has a multi-layer approach, giving users more options and control. The display on Xiaomi’s Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro is a 7-step Intelligent AdaptiveSync display with 7 different refresh rates: 30 Hz, 48 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 120 Hz and 144 Hz.
For example, movies (typically shot at 24FPS) are played at 48Hz, TV series (typically shot at 25 FPS) are played at 50 Hz, video recording at 60Hz, gaming at 144Hz, among other things. Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC) technology will allow users to add more frames making the video smoother for a better viewing experience.
Xiaomi claims that this technology will help users save 8-10% extra battery life. The seamless screen transitions also reduce eye discomfort and dizziness especially for gamers or while scrolling through content.
