To ensure the protection of all chats happening on its platform, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp introduced 'end-to-end encryption' which means that the message remains secure between the sender and recipient and no third part can have access to it. Here is what it means to be end-to-end encrypted.
According to a BGR India report, the end-to-end encryption basically means that all contents that are being exchanged on WhatsApp like messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, status updates and calls are secured from falling into the wrong hands. This end-to-end encryption feature ensures that all messages are secured with a lock and only the sender and the receiver have the special key needed to unlock the messages.
By means of end-to-end encryption, it is ensured that when two persons communicate on this messaging platform, only the sender and the receiver will be able to see or hear what is being sent and received. No one else, including WhatsApp will be able to know about the conversation between these two individuals. It must also be noted that WhatsApp has auto enabled the end-to-end encryption for all accounts which means that no one will need to turn any special settings to secure their messages.
The feature also applies for WhatsApp Business. In an official blog post, the social media platform noted, "Every WhatsApp message is protected by the same Signal encryption protocol that secures messages before they leave your device. When you message a WhatsApp business account, your message is delivered securely to the destination chosen by the business."
Recently, WhatsApp Payments have also been made available in India, to transfer funds between bank accounts. For this, WhatsApp is required to store users’ card and bank account details, but assured these details are all stored encrypted and in a highly secured network.
