e-Shram: The Ministry of Labour and Employment launched the e-Shram portal under the Government of India on August 26, 2021. e-Shram portal aims to help people like migrant workers, construction workers, domestic helps, street vendors, waiters, beauticians, handicraft makers, fisherfolk, agricultural labour, etc.--without charge at CSCs, labour facilitation centres and State Seva Kendras (SSKs), and through self-registration.
After registration on the portal, workers will receive their e-Shram card with a unique 12 digit number and will be able to avail themselves of welfare benefits under social security schemes anywhere in India.
Any worker aged between 16 and 59 and working in the unorganised sector is eligible for the e-Shram card.
Benefits of e-Shram Card
- It aims to improve the implementation efficiency of the social security services for the unorganised workers.
- It is supposed to help integrate Social Security Schemes meant for UWs being administered by MoLE and subsequently those run by other ministries.
- Central Government has developed an e-SHRAM portal to create a centralised database of unorganised workers seeded with Aadhaar.
- After registering, a person will get an accidental insurance cover of 2 Lacs under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY).
- In future, all the social security benefits of unorganised workers will be delivered directly through this portal.
- In emergency and national pandemic like situations, this database may be utilised to provide necessary assistance to the eligible unorganised workers.
How can you get an e-Shram card?
The e-Shram card will be issued to workers who successfully register on the portal. On the card, there will be a 12-digit UAN number.
Members of the E-Shram portal will no longer have to register for any other government social welfare program.
What is a UAN number?
UAN is a 12-digit number uniquely assigned to each unorganised worker after registration on the portal.
Once assigned, it will be a permanent number and will remain unchanged for the worker’s life.
Steps to register for an E-Shram card online:
- Visit the official website.
- The link for registration will be on the side of the page.
- Click on ‘Register on E-Shram’
- Enter Aadhaar linked mobile number and Captcha
- Click on ‘Send OTP’
- Enter the OTP, the registration form for E-Shram will open.
- Enter personal, educational and bank details
- This will complete the registration.

- Aadhaar number
- Aadhar linked to an active mobile number
- Bank account details
- Age must be between 16-59 years
- Not a member of EPFO/ESIC or NPS (Govt. funded)
