Zee Business’ Mrityunjay Kumar Jha spoke to Surendra Mehta, National Secretary at India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd., about his expectations from the move and how long it can take.
Mehta said that so far in the past 6 months, around 5 crore pieces of jewellery had received hallmarking, which is approximately equivalent to 500 tons. Therefore, every month around 80 tons of jewellery is getting hallmarked, which demonstrates that 80 to 90 per cent of the jewellery requirement of India is completed by the 256 districts.
So even if the government implements this in 28 more states, it is only good for the people there because then they will get access to pure jewellery.
Mehta welcomed this decision and said it was a good initiative. He said hallmarking always results in increased demand for jewellery.
He also said that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has always kept vigilance on jewellers and hallmarking centres. Industry association and BIS, and hallmarking association is constantly working to improve the bugs and flaws in the hallmarking system.
