Sensex and Nifty rally over 1% as PSU banks, oil & gas drive market gains
The stock market after remaining buoyant for most part of the session ended in the green for the second consecutive day. At the close, Sensex settled higher by 1.25 per cent ot 992.74 points at 80,109.85, while the NSE Nifty ended 1.32 per cent or 314.65 points higher at 24,221.9.
Top Performers
Key gainers on the Nifty included ONGC, Shriram Finance, Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises, and L&T, reflecting optimism across major industries.
Blue-chip stocks such as Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries, and State Bank of India led the charge, with significant gains also seen in Power Grid, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. However, JSW Steel, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra were among the laggards.Sectoral Highlights
Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks, oil & gas, realty, and capital goods sectors saw significant buying interest, rallying two to four percent. Midcap and smallcap indices also surged, adding over 1.5 percent each, indicating robust market-wide participation.
Underperformers
On the other hand, tech heavyweights JSW Steel, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and Sun Pharma faced selling pressure, slightly capping broader market gains.
Sensex soars to 80,110, Nifty breaches 24,220 as BJP’s Maharashtra win fuels optimism
Indian equity markets witnessed a robust rally on Monday, buoyed by BJP’s record-breaking victory in Maharashtra. The Sensex jumped 992.74 points to close at 80,109.85, while the Nifty surged 314.65 points, ending at 24,221.90.
Zomato’s inclusion in Sensex
In a significant reshuffle, Zomato will replace JSW Steel in the Sensex from December 23, reflecting growing investor confidence in new-age tech firms.
Analyst insight
“The Maharashtra election results have injected optimism, highlighting a stable political environment conducive to economic reforms,” noted VK Vijayakumar of Geojit Financial Services.
