Weather update: Traffic snarls were reported from across the national capital region (NCR) due to waterlogging on Monday morning. Rains over the last couple of days have not only brought the mercury down but have also thrown a spanner in the vehicular traffic.
On Monday morning, commuters going through ITO, DND, Barapullah, Mukarba Chowk, Noida gate battled intractable jams. The air quality at 9.05 am read 41, which was in the good category. The weatherman has forecast a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain.
Second highest rainfall in a single day since 2007
Delhi received 74 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am, the second highest rainfall in a single day since 2007, according to the India Meteorological Department's data.
9 killed in rain-related incidents in UP
Heavy rains lashed several parts of Uttar Pradesh, claiming at least nine lives and throwing common life out of gear. The traffic movement on Balrampur-Badhri National Highway 730 was affected after it was inundated by floodwater. In Mathura, a Rajasthan state road transport bus carrying passengers was stuck at the railway underpass. The fire department came to rescue of the passengers.
The flooding has also affected daily life in Bahraich district. District Magistrate Dinesh Chandra Singh told reporters, Flood-like situation has been reported in 60 villages of Nanpara and Mihipurva tehsils due to excess rains.
Schools shut in several districts
Authorities of a dozen districts, including Lucknow, Aligarh, Meerut, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and Ghaziabad, ordered closure of schools on Monday in the wake of heavy rains. In Aligarh, all schools up to class 12 will remain closed till October 12.
Alert sounded for Tamil Nadu
Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in many parts of Tamil Nadu till October 11. In a tweet, IMD said, "Heavy rainfall spell likely to continue over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan during next 2 days. Heavy rainfall spell over Tamilnadu & Rayalaseema during next 5 days and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Telangana during next 24 hours."
