Tamil Nadu lockdown News: The Tamil Nadu government has announced a two-week complete lockdown in the state witnessing a sharp rise in the Covid-19 cases. The government on Saturday announced the lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

As per a statement by Chief Minister M K Stalin, the lockdown was being enforced due to "unavoidable reasons" and pointed out that the decision was taken based on inputs received at a review meeting he had with district collectors on Friday, besides consultations with medical experts.

The Chief Minister has said that the total lockdown will be enforced from 4 am on May 10 to 4 am on May 24. After the CM took oath on Friday, this is the first major decision announced by him.

All grocery shops will function until 12 pm and the restrictions imposed on cinemas, multiplexes, theatres, gyms, recreation clubs, bars, auditoriums, and other similar places will continue.

All the non-essential services in state departments will remain closed while health, police, fire service, disaster management, local administration and several other departments will function amid the two-week lockdown. Also, People who will be travelling within the country will have to register themselves online.

On Friday, Tamil Nadu had reported 26,465 new coronavirus cases pushing the caseload to 13.23 lakh. The state also reported a record 197 deaths in the last 24 hours which took the toll to 15,171. The active cases stood at 1,35,355, according to the health department.

Tamil Nadu is among the states that are showing an upward trend in daily new coronavirus cases, the Union Health Ministry had said on Friday.
