PM Modi bats for Uniform Civil Code, says Opposition inciting Muslims for their own gain
Stressing on UCC, he made it clear that running a country with multiple sets of laws is impractical and reiterated the need to provide equal rights enshrined in the Constitution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not adopt the path of vote bank politics and appeasement. At a rally in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, where the Assembly polls are due this year-end, PM said that the policy of appeasement is "disastrous" for the country. Addressing BJP workers, he said that the Supreme Court has also advocated for Uniform Civil Code, but parties favouring vote bank politics are opposing it.
The prime minister was addressing BJP workers who had been selected from across the country for contributing to their booths under BJP's 'Mera Booth Sabse Majboot' campaign.
Stressing on UCC, he made it clear that running a country with multiple sets of laws is impractical and reiterated the need to provide equal rights enshrined in the Constitution. "Muslims of India should understand who are those inciting them for their own gains. Today we are seeing some people inciting others (Muslims) in the name of a uniform civil code. Even the Constitution talks about equal rights for the citizens. They (the opposition) blame us, but it is they who do Muslim, Muslim," PM said.

“Today people are being instigated in the name of UCC. How can the country run on two (laws)? The Constitution also talks of equal rights...Supreme Court has also asked to implement UCC. These (Opposition) people are playing vote bank politics,” he added.
Earlier this month, the 22nd Law Commission of India initiated a fresh examination of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by seeking opinions and suggestions from the public and recognized religious organizations. This comes after the previous consultation paper, released by the Law Commission almost four years ago, stated that a UCC was not deemed necessary or desirable at that time.
