Nifty closes over 8,900-mark; Bharti Airtel top loser on BSE
Axis Bank was the top gainer on both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty after media reports said HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank have approached the Government of India to acquire the Mumbai-based bank.
Dalal Street closed positive for the second straight trading session with NSE Nifty crossing 8,900-mark first time since September 2016.
On Tuesday, Sensex closed at 28,761.59, up 100 points or 0.35% and Nifty at 8907.85 higher by 28.65 points or 0.32%.
Axis Bank was the top gainer on both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty after media reports said HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank have approached the Government of India to acquire the Mumbai-based bank.
Share price of Axis Bank ended the day at Rs 504.60 per piece on BSE, up by Rs 24 or 5%.
Other gainers on BSE were - Asian Paints at Rs 991.15 per piece (1.61%), Reliance Industries at Rs 1088.25 per piece (1.36%), Adani Ports at Rs 304.05 per piece (1.18%), Hindustan Uniliver at Rs 862.80 per piece (1.17%) and Housing Development Finance Corp at Rs 1409.05 per piece (1.06%).
Among the losers was Bharti Airtel which fell after its rival Reliance Jio announced tariff plans and Jio Prime Membership.
Other major losers were also - Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at Rs 2464.30 per piece, followed by ITC (Rs 263.35 per piece), Sun Pharma (Rs 673.25 per piece), Maruti Suzuki (Rs 6062.70 per piece) and Power Grid (Rs 205.80 per piece) ending negative in the range of 0.20% - 1.40%.
Meanwhile, Indian rupee closed flat at 66.986 against US dollar.
