Jagannath Rath Yatra 2023: Thousands of devotees will watch the Jagannath Rath Yatra — when the three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra will be moved from the Jagannath Temple to Shree Gundicha Temple — on Tuesday, June 20. 

The three chariots — Nandighosh of Lord Jagannath, Taladhwaj of Lord Balabhadra and Dwarpadalan of Devi Subhadra — will be taken from Jagannath Temple's 'Singhadwar' (Lion's Gate or main gate) to the Shree Gundicha temple, where they'll stay for a week.

Crowds of thousands of devotees throng Puri to take 'darshan' of Lord Jagannath and his two siblings - elder brother Balabhadra and younger sister Subhadra every year.

The chariots of the three deities are constructed every year with wood of trees like phassi and dhausa. The wood is brought from the former princely state of Dasapalla by a team of carpenters who traditionally have hereditary rights and privileges for building the rath.

On Monday, a large number of devotees visited the Jagannath Temple on the occasion of Nabajouban darshan — the event that marks the deities' recovery from 14-day long illness.

At 7.20 AM, the Parimanika darshan of the Lords began, followed by the Sahana Mela darshan from 8:05 a.m. where devotees got to witness the new attire or Nabajoubana Besha of the Lords from the Bhitara Katha inside the Jagmohan.

Odisha Chief Secretary P.K. Jena said that sufficient drinking water facilities have been made and all arrangements have been done keeping heatwave condition in view. Water sprinkling will be done by the fire service personnel and ORS will also be given to the devotees.

Tight security arrangements have been made in and around Puri town for the festival, the officials said, adding that approximately 170 platoons of police personnel will be deployed for the conduct of the yatra. And a Coast Guard helicopter will patrol the beach. Interceptor boats will be stationed at Paradip, ready for any contingency.
