India's milk production rises 6.28% in 2014-15
The national capital has the lowest per capita consumption of milk per day at 36 grams.
India produced 155.5 million tonnes of milk in 2015-16, up 6.28% from the 146.3 million tonnes produced in the 2014-15 period.
Compared to last year, the per capita availability of milk has also gone up, albeit marginally, to 337 grams per day from 322 grams per day in 2014-15. The information was provided by Minister of State for Agriculture Sudarshan Bhagat, in the Lok Sabha.
In 2014-15, India ranked first in milk production in the world. In the year, country's milk production grew 6.26% from 2013-14, when the global milk production rose only by 3.1%, as noted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
In terms of per capita consumption, in 2014-15, Punjab had the highest (1032 grams/day) consumption followed by Haryana (877 grams/day).

According to Dairy Tech India, India's milk production is expected to touch 180 million tonnes by 2020.
The government is undertaking several measures to boost output in the country.
This includes,
> National Dairy Plan Phase- I (NDP-I) has been approved by the government with an outlay of Rs 2,242 crore for the implementation during 2011-12 to 2018-19 as a Central Sector Scheme in 18 major milk producing states.
> National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) under the Central Sector Scheme “National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development”.
> Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme: “Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS)” is implemented through National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) across the country.
