Heavy rains lash Delhi NCR, J & K, and Punjab: Catch latest updates, IMD issues red alert for parts of Himachal Pradesh

Heavy rains have lashed parts of New Delhi as many states in North India and has severely disturned daily life in those places. In the National Capital, the Delhi government has already issued a flood warning as the level of Yamuna is rising due to heavy rainfall. On Monday morning, a total of 287211 cuesecs of water was released from Hathnikund barrage in Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar. The extra water will pass through Sonepat and is expected to reach Delhi in 72 hours. The Central Water Commission (CWC) on Sunday said that once this water reaches Delhi, the water level in the Yamuna river is likely to cross the danger mark (205.33 meter). The highest water level recorded in Yamuna was 207.49 meters on September 6, 1978.

"The first warning is being issued as a discharge of 105,453 cusecs has been released into the Yamuna river from the Hathni Kund Barrage on July 9, which is more than 1 lakh cusec," the Central Flood Control Room, Irrigation & Flood Control Department said in its announcement.

Tunnel closed near Pragati Maidan

In a latest update in Delhi, the tunnel at Pragati Maidan has been closed due to heavy rain alert. People's problems have increased. Due to the danger of water filling in the tunnel, the tunnel has been closed. 

Delhi CM to hold a meeting

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reportedly has called for a meeting on Monday to discuss issues related to the heavy rains in the capital, and the rising water level of the Yamuna river.

IANS reported that the meeting to be held at the Delhi Secretariat and will be attended by MCD officials and heads of all government departments. 

The discussion will focus on emergency measures to be taken in the wake of the torrential rains.

Police in Shahdara alerts people of rising water level

Shahdara district police on Sunday visited the Yamuna floodplains and alerted the residents about the rising water level.

The police also urged local residents to shift to a safer place amid the rising levels of the Yamuna.

"We are here to inform you all that the level of Yamuna has risen due to heavy rainfall. You all requested to vacate the area and move to a safer place," a police officer told residents living by the Yamuna banks.

IMD predicts moderate to heavy rainfall for parts of Himachal Pradesh

"Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is very likely to continue in the districts of Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Una, Hamirpur, Mandi and Kullu in most places and very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places," the IMD said.

The IMD further stated that few locations in the remaining districts are likely to see light to moderate rainfall.

"Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at a few places in the rest of the districts," said the IMD.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh (HP) Traffic, Tourist and Railways Police on Monday took to its Twitter handle and said that the IMD has issued a red alert for various parts of the state and laid down instructions by the local administration.

"The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for most districts of the state today, which means there is a "very high risk of heavy to very heavy rainfall".
