Government teams have found a large hoarding of soyabean and mustard seeds in Madhya Pradesh, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution announced on April 12, 2022, in a PIB release.
The Government will continue its investigation till April 30, 2022, Zee Business' Ambarish Pandey reported. The three states witnessed an unprecedented increase in prices of edible oil. The reason behind the hoardings beyond the prescribed limit could be part of a plan to increase the prices of edible oils, the report said.

Amid rising edible oil prices, the Centre sent its teams to eight states — Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Gujarat and Delhi. The ministry said that inspections are going on in the last five states.
Additionally, huge quantities of edible oils have been found in excess of the prescribed quantities of the control order in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a press release.
According to the ministry, teams from the Department of Food & Public Distribution have been delegated to conduct surprise inspections of the stocks of edible oils and oilseeds held by retailers, wholesalers, big chain retailers and processors in the major oilseed producing and consuming states.
In a statement, the ministry said: “Inspections have revealed very large hoardings of soyabean and mustard seeds in Dewas, Shajapur & Guna districts of Madhya Pradesh. These seeds were much above the stock limit prescribed by the Government.”
According to the ministry, the hoarding of seeds has pushed up the price of soyabean oil. The state government has been asked to act under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
In addition, large quantities of edible oils were found in Maharashtra and Rajasthan in excess of what had been prescribed by the control order, the ministry said, adding that wholesalers and big chain retail outlets were the main violators.
It said the state governments were urged to take corrective measures in accordance with relevant sections of the EC Act.
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have been requested to ensure that the supply chain is not disrupted when enforcing the EC Act, it said.
The ministry noted that the price of cooking oil is on the rise globally and said, “The domestic prices of edible oils have been following the international suit and the prices have increased considerably over the past one month which may be attributed to the current geopolitical condition.”
