FULL LOCKDOWN in Kerala declared by CM Pinarayi Vijayan as Covid-19 cases surge past 41,000 mark; to apply from May 8

Kerala lockdown news: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has imposed complete lockdown in Kerala amid spiraling coronavirus cases in the state. Announcing the lockdown in Kerala, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said essential services will be allowed during lockdown period and initially this lockdown will remain in force until May 16. The development assumes significance in the backdrop that the state recorded massive over 41,000 cases on Wednesday.

“The State is going through a very serious situation and Covid 19 is spreading rapidly. All figures are increasing and the test positivity rate is not reducing either. In these circumstances, we need to strengthen the restrictions,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister said steps will be taken to convert lodges and hostels as Covid First Line Treatment Centres (CFLTCs).

Kerala Chief Minister had hinted at complete lockdown earlier when he had said more stringent measures will have to be taken to curb the Covid 19 surge.

On Wednesday, Kerala witnessed 41,953 new COVID-19 cases, while 23,106 people were cured of the infection, pushing the caseload to 17,43,932 and recoveries to 13.62 lakh. The toll mounted to 5,565 with 58 more deaths.  

The Kerala government had also announced to deploy medical students in fight against corona to strengthen the anti-COVID actions on the ground.
