Delhi lockdown news: Extension or lifting of restrictions? CM Arvind Kejriwal may decide today

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is likely to take a final call on the extension of the Covid-19 lockdown in Delhi on Sunday. The complete shutdown in the national capital is scheduled to end on Monday (May 17).

According to the reports, the Delhi government is likely to extend the lockdown further till May 24. Talking about the Covid cases in Delhi, CM Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that the city has recorded less than 10,000 cases in the last 24 hours which is the first time this month.

A six-day lockdown was announced by CM Kejriwal on April 19 to break the chain of the coronavirus infection and to boost the health system. Since then, the shutdown has been extended thrice to bring the situation under control.

The total shutdown was extended till May 17 by the chief minister last week. He said that any leniency would squander the gains achieved so far in the current wave of the pandemic. Strict measures like suspension of Metro trains and prohibition of wedding ceremonies at public venues were also imposed by the AAP government.

The Chief Minister in his address on Saturday and Friday had stressed upon the importance and the vital role of this lockdown in stabilizing the Covid-19 situation in the national capital.

He said that the decline in the number of infections and lower positivity rate is the result of the complete lockdown in the city. He also stressed that Delhiites should continue taking all necessary precautions to ensure that cases do not rise.

Earlier, National Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) had requested the CM to lift the lockdown and open markets in a phased manner with strict enforcement of laws. While on the other hand, Dr Balram Bhargava, head of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had asked the Delhi government to extend the lockdown.
