Cyclone Nisarga set to hit Mumbai, IMD issues RED ALERT! Check most vulnerable areas
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert on Cyclone Nisarga, which is likely to hit Mumbai on 3rd June (Wednesday). The cyclone is moving towards the coast of Maharashtra and Gujarat and its intensity is likely to increase in the next 12-24 hours

Dr D.R. Patnaik Scientist and Head of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) division at IMD said that the estimated wind speed will be around 110 km/hr. The most vulnerable districts will likely be Palghar, Mumbai, Thane and Raigarh districts, he added.

On the preparedness, S.N. Pradhan, Director General of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said that the Cyclone Nisarga is comparatively less severe than Cyclone Amphan and the NDRF team is fully prepared to deal with the cyclone.
The NDRF will be deploying overall 41 teams for all the places including Mumbai. The teams will reach these areas by today evening, he said. Many teams are on the way, he added. Currently, 16 teams are working in Maharashtra while 11 in Gujarat.
The state government has given a tentative figure regarding the number of people who need to be evacuated and people are already being evacuated, Pradhan said. He said that the state’s approach is zero casualty approach.
Ten teams of NDRF has already been deployed in Mumbai. The NDRF is in constant touch with the district administration and the IMD. The state government is also ready to deal with any eventuality according to a Zee Media Correspondent Rajiv Ranjan. The BMC has also asked its officials in every ward to take people living in the low lying areas to the safe places. Around 32 villages have been alerted along the coastlines while instruction have been issued to the fisher men to not go to the sea till June end.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic which has been severe in Mumbai, the challenges of social distancing will be there Pradhan said, adding that the team was well prepared. He said that the team is taking learning from the recent cyclone Amphan experience with it.
