Cyclonic storm in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh: The depression over Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and lays about 750 kilometres off Chennai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression would develop into a cyclonic storm influencing moderate to heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh) by December 10, according to the weather bulletin.
The Tamil Nadu government has made all precautionary measures in light of the forecast for heavy rainfall and an expected cyclone.
Cyclonic Storm Mandous Weather alert: Rainfall and wind alert for December 8, 9, 10
Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places predicted over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. And isolated heavy rainfall can be expected over adjoining areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on December 8.
Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfalls at isolated places very likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Rayalaseema on December 9.
It is likely to reduce and lead to light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema and south Andhra Pradesh on December 10.
Squally wind, speed reaching 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph, is likely to prevail over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on 8th December. Gale wind, speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph likely to prevail over southwest Bay of Bengal. It would further increase to become 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph, over the same region from the morning of Thursday and 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph till evening. It would decrease thereafter gradually.

As per the decree issued by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), cyclones is named to avoid confusion — especially in a scenario where multiple systems operate in one location.

Tamil Nadu decided to close schools and colleges in 23 districts due to the rainfall and heavy rainfall predictions made by the Indian Meteorological Department and Regional Meteorological Department.
