COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout: From healthcare workers, frontline workers, elderly to general public, who gets it first

COVID-19 Vaccine rollout: Morgan Stanley Highlights that Indian government's first goal in its upcoming vaccination drive is to protect lives by safeguarding the vulnerable population. Thereafter, it aims to stop transmission of the virus. For vaccine logistics, the government has established 31 main hubs from where vaccines will be distributed to 29000 vaccination points with the help of state governments. The government has identified 51k public health facilities and 162k private health facilities for vaccine rollout. Vaccination will start with healthcare workers (10mn), then proceed to frontline workers (20mn) and to the elderly population (270mn) before it is given for general public use. 

Importantly, the vaccine stockpile is just about enough to address the needs of this priority group (300mn) for some time.

India has six vaccines under various stages of development and human trials. Of these, the regulator (Drug Controller of India, DCGI) gave restricted emergency approval on January 3, 2021 to two vaccines: Covishield (manufactured by Serum Institute of India in partnership with Oxford) and Covaxin from Bharat Biotech.

Other vaccines include Cadila Healthcare's (moving to phase 3trial) and Sputnik V (conducting phase 2and phase 3trails). These could be ready in the next 3-4 months. The last two vaccines are from Genova and Biologics E. Both are in the initial phases of clinical trials (phase 1 and phase 2).
