As per an ANI report, Atishi Marlena, Delhi MLA stated that despite the COVID-19 vaccination centres being increased extensively, the stock of Covaxin has been exhausted and as a result of this about 100 centres administering Covaxin have been forced to shut down temporarily. She also added, "So, from Thursday, Delhi will not be able to administer Covaxin to the 18-44 age group, due to shortage of vaccines. Bharat Biotech has refused to deliver any additional doses of Covaxin to Delhi."
However, the Delhi MLA is hopeful of the fact that the central government will intervene in this matter and restore the supply of Covaxin vials to Delhi.
The central government had announced that the vaccination drive from May 1, 2021, will include the adults between the age group 18 and 44. The vaccination drives for those above 60 years and 45 years of age had already been started earlier. Incidentally, there are four days of Covaxin left for frontline workers and those above 45 in Delhi. The shots are also essential for those who received the first dose around four weeks ago. AAP MLA Atishi Marlena also informed that Covishield stock is left for three days.
For the people belonging to the age group 18 and 44, nine days of stock for Covishield is left. Pune-bases Serum Institute of India is manufacturing Covishield which is the local version of Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
4,74,629 beneficiaries from the age group 18 and 44 received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as on May 11, 2021, till 8 PM as per a report by ANI. With this, cumulatively 30,39,287 beneficiaries across 30 states and union territories have received COVID-19 vaccination since the beginning of phase 3 of the vaccination drive.
Atishi Marlena stated that they are sincerely hoping that the centre will make sufficient doses of Covaxin and Covishield available in the next few days for Delhi.
