To combat it, the weapon against the pandemic in India, the COVID-19 vaccine, is being provided to the public. Now, there are certain queries among the common people regarding the vaccination drive and the process involved in it. Many are asking an important question - is Aadhaar card required for COVID-19 vaccination?

Recently, the UIDAI has assured people that no one will be denied the COVID-19 vaccine jab if they do not have an Aadhaar card. The tweet reads, "NO one shall be denied vaccine, medicine, hospitalization, or treatment for want of #Aadhaar."

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) made it very clear that Aadhaar should not be misused as an excuse for denial of any essential service. According to PTI, in a statement, the UIDAI said there is a well-established exception handling mechanism (EHM) for Aadhaar, and that it should be followed to ensure delivery of benefits and services in the absence of the 12-digit biometric ID. The statement issued by UIDAI assumes a significance when the country is reeling under the adverse effects of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. UIDAI confirmed that if any resident does not possess Aadhaar for any reason, they must not be denied essential services as per Aadhaar Act.
India had started its vaccination drive with Covaxin and Covishield on January 16, 2021. The second phase of COVID-19 vaccination to inoculate people above 60 years of age and those above 45 years with comorbidities was started from March 1, 2021. The third phase began from April 1, 2021, where all above 45 years were included. In the next phase, that started from May 1, 2021, all adults above 18 years of age were included.
According to the Union Health Ministry, on May 16, the country recorded 3,26,098 new COVID-19 cases and 4077 COVID-19 related deaths.
