According to a DNA report, CRP stands for C-reactive protein. It has been observed that in most people who have tested COVID-19 positive, there has been a raised C-reactive protein (CRP) level. The CRP blood test helps in detecting the presence of of inflammation or an infection in the body. Inflammation is a broad term that describes the release of chemicals involved in immune responses. In case of COVID-19, the C-reactive protein is a commonly used blood marker as increased levels may reflect infection spreading in the body. One must note that CRP tests integrate signals from a number of different proteins involved in inflammation, called cytokines in order to provide physicians with a snapshot of the patient's inflammatory activity within a matter of hours.
When the CRP level is of a higher value that the normal value then the indication is that the infection is increasing. It must be noted that the CRP test is a marker that displays the C-reactive protein level which is made by the liver, in the blood. In case the CRP is more than 70mg/L, even with normal SPO2, it might be an indication of impending cytokine storm which needs an immediate medical attention.
Now, you would want to know about who should take the CRP test? In answer to this an Indian Express report stated that patients with mild and moderate COVID-19 symptoms, CRP is not necessary unless and until the patient is suffering from the same symptoms even after the passage of five days.
