According to an ANI report, Dr M V Padma Srivastava, Head of the Department. Department of Neurology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said, "Everybody is saying not to let your guard down. Otherwise, we will hit the third wave. We have the history of hundred years ago that even the Spanish flu pandemic did have a third wave, so history is repeating itself. This is being said because of the number of variants and inappropriate behaviour among other things."
Neeraj Nischal, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, AIIMS said that the COVID-19 waves will depend on two factors - one is virus-related and the second is human-related. Now, the mutation of the virus is beyond anyone's control. Nischal added that by means of COVID-appropriate behaviour, one will be able to resist these waves.
ANI also quoted Dr. Srivastava as saying, "We are going through the second wave. We are opening up the doors for third wave. That is the reason why people have been red-flagging that our attitude should be appropriate." According to the data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), as on June 21, 2021, India has reported 53,256 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours which is the lowest in 88 days.
Furthermore, so far, 28 crore vaccine doses have been administered under the nationwide vaccination drive. Also, the centralised vaccination policy in India begins today, under which free COVID-19 vaccines will be provided to all citizens in the country who are above 18 years of age. The announcement regarding this centralised vaccination policy was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an address to the nation on television.
While speaking on the benefits of getting COVID-19 vaccine shots, Nischal said, "Vaccination will help in preventing you from getting an infection, even if you get infected, it will ensure that you do not get a severe form of the disease."
Sr. Srivastava informed, "Yes, the third wave is being predicted by everybody and actually the prediction is also that we can take care that it should not happen. It need not happen if we contribute responsibly."
According to reports, the highly transmissible variant first identified in India is now making 99 per cent of the fresh COVID-19 infections in the UK.
