ANI reported that following the recruitment of children between 6 and 12 years, AIIMS Delhi will be conducting trials for the age group between 2 and 6 years. On June 14, 2021, the news agency tweeted, "AIIMS Delhi to start recruitment for clinical trials tomorrow onwards on 6-12 age group children and 2-6 age group after that. Trial for 6-12 age group to start from tomorrow. Recruitment & clinical trial for single-dose COVAXIN for 12-18 age group is over."
According to sources, the recruitment for clinical trials of Covaxin among children between 12 and 18 years of age is over, and they have been given single dose of Covaxin. The trials of the children between 6 and 12 years of age will take place across 525 centres. Furthermore, AIIMS Patna, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute in Karnataka have also been selected for conducting clinical trials on children.
It must be noted that the COVID-19 vaccination drive commenced in the country from January 16, 2021 with Covishield and Covaxin COVID-19 vaccines. The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had various adverse impacts in the country and in an attempt to get majority of the population vaccinated all adults above 18 years of age were included in the vaccination drive from May 1, 2021.
Now, according to several media reports there is a possibility of a third wave of this COVID-19 pandemic which can affect the children. In order to vaccinate the entire population of the country, these vaccination trials on children between age groups 6 and 12 and 2 and 6 will be of utmost importance. It has been already stated earlier that the recruitment and clinical trial of single-dose Covaxin for those between 12 and 18 years is over.
Prabhat Kumar Singh, Director, AIIMS Patna said in this regard, "We have started recruitment of children aged 6-12 years. Recruitments for clinical trials on children aged 12-18 years is over. They will be kept under observation."
